Learn to Play Hockey-Formerly the Rec League

The Registration "Recreational League-Learn to Play" is not currently available.

Program Information

The LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY program, formerly known as the RECREATIONAL LEAGUE is an introductory program that allows new players to learn to play hockey in a low stress instructional environment with a low time and money commitment. Participants can build skills and confidence in this 6 week program to prepare them for the travel program, if that is their desire.  

Open to boys and girls, ages 7-10 (Birth Years 2011-2008)

(Boys and girls with a birth year of 2012 & younger are encouraged to join the Mini Mite(6U) program. No USA Hockey fee is needed and is a similar development program to Learn to Play. If older than 2008, please contact the "Rec League" Coordinator)

2018 Fall Session: (Registration Open)

Sundays 4:30 - 5:30 pm (Arrive by 4:00 pm to dress in equipment)

October 7, 14, 21, 28  and November 4, 11

2019 Winter Session: (Registration opens after the completion of Fall Session)

Sundays 4:30 - 5:30 pm (Arrive by 4:00 pm to dress in equipment) 

January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10


Session Format

Each 1 hour session will be led by USA Hockey certified coaches.

  • Warm-up-5 minutes
  • Skills Stations- 30 minutes
  • Break
  • 3 vs 3 "cross-ice" game


Lakes Area Hockey will provide (at the first session on Oct. 7th; socks, stick, and a practice jersey for the participant to keep)

Free Equipment Rental: 

The following list of equipment can be "checked out" with a deposit check:

  • Skates
  • Helmet
  • Breezers
  • Shin pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Shoulder pads
  • Gloves

Equipment check-out days will be posted soon. Equipment is available on a first come-first served basis. 

The Player provides the following: 

  • Mouth guard
  • Duffel bag for equipment
  • Water bottle

Registration Information

Registration numbers are limited to 15 participants. Once 15 participants have registered, a waiting list will be created. 

On October 7th, registration for the Fall Session will close.  Once the sessions have started, we recommend players wait till the January session to start. Registration for the Winter Session will open after the completion of the Fall Session. 

Cost: $30 + $50 USA Hockey Fee*

(*If you participated in a Try Hockey for Free event, often a coupon code is given by USA Hockey to waive the $50 fee. Check your email used to register for Try Hockey for Free. Lakes Area Hockey"s last Try Hockey for Free was March 3rd, 2018. )


Fundraising and Volunteer Opportunities

The Boji Bay Ice Arena is volunteer run organization that strives to provide affordable activities during the winter season.

Participation in volunteer opportunities and fundraising are welcome but are optional for Learn to Play families.
